Architect or “Architectural Designer”

What’s the difference?

Anyone can call themselves an “Architectural Designer”, or sell Architectural Services. No qualifications, experience, competence, or (most importantly) professional indemnity insurance are necessary. Often a limited company is used to avoid personal liability, and their advertising might use “Architect” as a term to catch search engines, e.g. “We are cheaper than using an Architect”.

Anyone can use the title “Architectural Technologist” or “Architectural Technician”, but these may be members of professional organisations which require their members to hold indemnity insurance. Membership requires providing evidence of appropriate education and experience.

“Architect” is a protected title in the UK, and identifies those who are registered with the government regulator, and all carry insurance should things go wrong.

Regulator Professional Indemnity Insurance
Architect compulsory registration – Architects Registration Board (ARB)

When choosing a company or individual for architectural work always ask to see a copy of their Professional Indemnity Insurance. This provides cover should there be a fault with the design. This is not the same as Public Liability Insurance, which provides cover if the holder causes damage during a survey.

“Architect” is a protected title in the UK, and misuse of the title is a criminal offence. The Architects Registration Board holds the government’s register of Architects and regulates their activities.

“The Architects Register is the definitive record of all UK architects. If someone is not on the Register, they are not an architect – it’s as simple as that.”
